I've had this problem in the past. I called it 'the lunge'. Instead of a smooth transition at the top I'd over rotate the backswing then flail at the ball and chunk it. I think the hardest thing to do when playing is to 'check' the backswing so the club doesn't wrap around, then make a smooth transition to the downswing.

I try to take a couple lessons every season to help with stuff like that. I also find it helps me to focus on my finish position as opposed to thinking about the ball or the backswing. I've always found it very difficult to give or get advice from other players. Everybody means well but a good pro can spot stuff that actually works for you.

You say you hit good shots on the range but miss on the course. Are all your shots on the range solid, or just one out of every three or four? If that's the case you might need some outside help, obviously you only get the one try on the golf course. If you are hitting consistent shots on the range then try a Jedi mind trick next time and pretend you are on the range next time you play.

Good luck!

when addressing the golf ball, do not ground the club, keep the club off the ground, like 1" off the ground, and tell yourself hit the ball clean.
hope it works for you, it works for me.
